Parties Made Easy: Essential Tips for No Fuss Festive Entertaining

Party season is here and entertaining can become a big thing in your household! Whether you’re hosting a pre-Christmas party, family Christmas Day celebrations, a New Year’s Eve bash, or even looking ahead to hosting celebrations for Australia Day later in January, the key to having a successful and stress-free experience is all about being prepared.

Let’s face it, hosting a party can be stressful. But don’t let stress spoil the event for you!

Here are some top tips for hassle-free festive entertaining:

Make a Plan

Without a plan, you plan to fail. This applies in al
l areas, from working to hosting a party. Well in advance, you need to: set the date; make a guest list; send out invitations and get RSVPs; plan food and drinks you’ll be serving; decide if and how you’ll decorate the space; and actually begin preparations well before the day-of.

Choose your Party Space

You do want your party to run smoothly, in a welcoming space. Having a party on a carpeted floor? Not such a great idea! Using a table you need to worry about scratching? Another bad idea!

Choose an area for your party that has low maintenance surfaces, not only so that you can stress less, but also so that at the end of the party, when everyone has gone home, it will be quick and easy to clean up. With so many homes now designed with an open plan, the best party space (especially when it’s too hot to be outside) is often going to be your open kitchen/dining/living area. And if it features some easy-care surfaces like sturdy laminate benchtops or wall panels, entertaining and cleaning up afterwards will be a breeze.

Prepare Food in Advance

Last minute shopping and food preparation just won’t work. Know well in advance what you’ll be serving, and organise as much as you can the day before. Even serving store-bought goodies can work beautifully if you use your own unique plates, bowls, and platters – presentation is the key.

If a guest offers to bring something, don’t decline! Even a plate of nibbles or a salad can be a huge contribution and make less work for you.

Remember, Less is More

You might want to decorate your party space in festive style, but remember, less is more. You don’t want your guests to feel they’ve entered a Christmas Nightmare with just too much tinsel and visual assaults of Christmas Cheer.  And speaking of Christmas Cheer, absolutely offer alcoholic refreshments, but don’t overdo it. Serve responsibly, and offer plenty of non-alcoholic options as well.

The main key to hassle-free entertaining is to not sweat the small stuff. The small details do make a difference, but at the end of the day, if you’re surrounded by great people, with just a little planning everything else will fall smoothly into place. Have fun!
